Happy Monday!!! To bring a little spark to the week ahead, it’s time for Monday to turn into “Must-have Monday” – bringing all sorts of amazing things that I’m loving right now.
This week’s Must-have Monday is entry into the Great Smoky Mountains Half Marathon, which has just been announced to occur September 12th, 2015. This race takes place just outside of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
I actually stumbled on these destination based races as I was looking at visiting a couple of the parks in 2015 and the Great Smoky Mountains was one of them. Cue the excitement of the Great Smoky Mountains Half announcement by race company Vacation Races. And it happens to be taking place when I’m looking at being there! Woohoo!!
As these races are not held by the National Parks Service, and to cut down the devastation to the environment thousands of runners can cause, the races are held just outside the actual park boundaries and are run with the environment in mind. This means no cups at the water stops (it’s BYO or use their Hydrapouch – it looks really interesting) and you have to carry all the trash you brought in. No Gu packets left on the ground!!
It’s important to take only memories and leave no trace.
This will be the second year that the event has been ran in the Smoky Mountains, and race reviews from the first year show an amazing race with a slight difficulty due to hills with a finish in the town of Townsend, TN. I think that the difficulty will be forgotten once the scenery is front and centre. Surely!
If you aren’t in the Smoky Mountains region during September, Vacation Races have seven other races, in iconic locations around the US – Zion, Grand Canyon, Grand Teton, Yellowstone, Rocky Mountains, Lake Powell and Yosemite (EXCITING!! I would love to do this one someday).
No matter which one you pick, all of these races have the chance to be somewhat amazing, running in some of the most beautiful spots in the United States.
Registration for the Great Smoky Mountains Half opens November 24th at http://greatsmokymountainshalfmarathon.com
Hope to see you out there in September 2015!!
This post was not sponsored in anyway, I truly am excited at the prospect of running in the Great Smoky Mountains and wanted to share this race with you all.
